Spending the day at the house is certainly a wonderful way to pass the time. However, venturing out and exploring the Downeast coast of Maine should definitely be part of your plans.
Just a few miles down the road are the villages of Corea and Winter Harbor. In Corea, check out Chapter Two, a humbly sophisticated gallery filled with amazing works from local artists and whimsical gifts.
Continue your journey back in time and visit the old fashioned “five and dime” hardware store in Winter Harbor. Bring the kids and rediscover what a tiny toy store should be; games, books, Jacob’s Ladder and, of course, kitchenware, hardware, newspapers, etc.
Downeast Maine is known for its unspoiled, rocky coastline and quaint fishing villages. Discover your favorite spots as you meander up and down the coast. Be sure to take the time to visit the Acadia National Park Schoodic Peninsula. This section of Acadia National Park is considered one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the ocean. It is quintessential Maine and well worth the trip. The 10 mile one way loop road boasts some of the most painted and photographed ocean views, and is a perfect biking trip as well.
Park your car at the Wrinkled Pickle in Birch Harbor and ride to the park’s entrance at the bottom of the hill and enjoy one of the most beautiful rides in America. When you’ve put your bikes back on the rack, go into the Wrinkled Pickle and have a cold one. Check out this hot spot, everything from pool tournaments and horseshoe tournaments to jazz depending on the night.
For the inland wanderer, look no farther than traveling north, outside of the village of Cherryfield off Route 182, and hiking the wonderful trails up Catherine’s and Tunk Mountains, located on Maine’s Bureau of Public Lands (BPL) Downeast Unit. In the same BPL Unit we highly recommend canoeists and kayakers launch at Spring River and Tunk Lakes and paddle to the many white sandy beaches these two waters have to offer to enjoy picnicking and swimming.
For the trout, salmon and bass fisherman, this same BPL Unit offers numerous lakes and ponds for very successful outings. The angler in the group will revel in the chance to fish for brown trout at Long Pond and Spring River Lake, landlocked salmon at Tunk Lake and smallmouth bass at Long and Round Ponds.
